Hugh Myddleton Primary School is located in the London borough of Islington. This large, inner city primary school serves a diverse community where more than half of the 450 children at the school receive free school meals.
The existing library at Hugh Myddleton was in need of updating. United Way provided the school with a brightly coloured reading space with bookshelves, a rug, beanbags and a wealth of storybooks. The Reading Oasis books and furniture provided a much-needed boost.
The whole school benefitted from the new space, with each class visiting weekly to explore hundreds of exciting new books. Smaller groups also use the Reading Oasis for literacy sessions, as well as one-to-one help for struggling readers. A team of parent and student volunteers also visit the Reading Oasis regularly to share books with the children.
The staff and pupils at Hugh Myddleton have worked tirelessly to raise standards across the school. The most recent inspection in June 2017 reported that “Pupils display a love of reading. High-quality texts are used in lessons throughout the school. …In every respect, pupils leave Hugh Myddelton exceptionally well prepared for the move to secondary school.. This is an Outstanding school”.
